Harleston Town have been knocked out of the FA Vase after a 4-1 defeat to Tring Athletic.
We would first of all congratulate all the players and staff of Tring Athletic and we wish you all the best in the next round and for the rest of the season.
Dubbed as "the biggest game in the clubs history" by Chairman Adam Mullin, you felt Town had to be on their very best to beat Tring Athletic. Tring are currently sat 6th in their respective league and after watching today you can see why they are one of the leagues stronger outfits.
It was well attended game with over 200 people in attendance and there were a few loyal Town supporters and volunteers that had made the 3 hour trip to Tring. We wanted to thank the Pulham supporters branch who made the long journey and were full of encouragement and full of cheer.
Town were without the suspended Nathan Stone and injuries to Ryan Crisp, Harry Hawthrone and Nathan Page whilst new boy Spencer Cawcutt was cup tied having previously represented Sheringham earlier in the competition. Whilst we had players missing we still had more then enough out there to get ourselves really into this game.
The game kicked off and Town started on the front foot straight away, this was something that was echoed by the management team and the first few minutes Town really started with some intensity. Asa McGeachy who was playing an unfamiliar role of Striker got behind the Tring defence but his cross come shot was deflected out for a corner.
But no sooner did i tweet that Town had started well the hosts broke the deadlock. It was a corner from the right hand side which was pulled back and the Tring midfielder unleashed a fantastic strike that left Elliot Pride routed. In all fairness it was a fantastic goal and its one of them that you don't see often.
This goal seemed to wake the home side up and they forced a great save out of Elliot Pride to keep it 1-0 but that was very short lived. The resulting corner was identical to the first where it was pulled back and even though this strike was nowhere near the level of the first goal it deflected past a helpless Pride and the home side were 2-0 within the first 12 minutes.
It was a nightmare start for Town as I sat there and thought that this afternoon could be a long one as the home side went into a 2 goal lead very early.
Town had a half chance when Barber was released down the left hand side but his well struck shot could only hit the side netting and no trouble the Tring keeper.
The home side nearly made it 3. The ever so lively number 9 found himself through on goal and he rounded Pride only to be caught up brilliantly by Harrison Hide who cleared at the six yard box.
Then the 3rd came and again it was from a corner. Luckily this wasn't the same as the first 2 but this time it was a back post header that went in and just up to the half way point of the first half Town were in a nightmare position.
There were calls from the side line to keep calm and not panic and continue to work hard. From that point on there wasn't many chances for either side as both of them cancelled each other out.
Half time and the home side had a deserved 3 goal lead.
The message at half time was simple, continue to work hard and continue to do the right things and we would get back into this game.
The perfect opportunity came when Robbie Turner was brought down and Town had a penalty 5 minutes into the restart.
Up stepped Josh Durham and in typical Town fashion over the years the penalty was saved. Josh is normally so reliable with that left foot but it was well saved by the keeper.
But then Town got a goal back. George Barber picked the ball up in his own half and in typical Barbs fashion he ran powerfully through the Tring midfield and defence to tuck away to make the score 3-1. If only that penalty would have been despatched a few minutes before we would of had a real game on our hands.
Town started to look strong and Tring dropped a little deeper to soak up the Town pressure and to be fair they did it very well. Whilst Towns patterns of play were better we didn't create anything meaningful that tested the Tring keeper.
Pride then made a great one on one save to deny Tring a 4th but the 4th was not too far away. This was a very well worked goal by the hosts as the midfielder picked up the ball and sprayed it to the full back who had too much pace for Delaney. He then cut it back and the striker finished well.
Town then had a great chance after great work between Durham and Hide. Durhams great ball into the channel was cut back by Hide and Robbie Turner hit the bar with a well struck effort.
Pride was then forced into another great save but the home side missed a golden chance to make it 5. The Tring winger played a beautiful ball through and he rounded the onrushing Pride but he somehow shot wide.
Full Time and on the base of play the home side fully deserved the victory. It was interesting from a personal point of view to see teams from different areas at the same level. I think Tring will go far into this competition and as stated earlier in the report we wish them all the best and we will be keeping a close eye on us.
But our boys can be proud of the effort shown and not allowing heads to drop. This can then be taken into Wednesday's game against Great Yarmouth in the league.
Again we waned to thank the travelling fans and volunteers for making the long trip.
